Artists please update your Drift profile & images

Visitors to the Drift plan their visit by checking out the art on the web site beforehand. A blank page with no bio or images doesn't look good for you or for us. So this is the most important thing you can do to help us promote your work.

If you showed your work at the Drift last year, we hope you will have something new to show this year, if possible.

It's also important to have an idea of the number of pieces you would ideally like to show and the dimensions of the pieces.

And please contact Diane if you have any additional  information re: number and dimensions of pieces.

2010 Drift Artists' Orientation meeting will be coming up later in August or early September

We'll let you know the specifics as soon as we can. This will be an opportunity to learn more about how things work from other artists- some of the do's and dont's, and to get ideas & publicity materials to help promote yourself and the Drift.

July 20, 2010

We are very sad to say goodbye to our friend, artist & Drift Board member William P Stock who passed away on Thursday, July 15. Bill was a great guy and a wonderful photographer who shared his enthusiasm and energy with everyone he met. He was always ready to volunteer to help others. There is a memorial service in his honour being held on Thursday, July 22 at the Salvation Army, 119 Cordova Street, at 3 PM.

Bill was excited about his photographs being shown at Leighdon Gallery and sadly he wasn't able to get to the opening only a few days before he died. The show continues until July 30.

Leighdon Studio Gallery

Call for Artists:Timeraisers Vancouver #3

This call pays fair market value, up to $800, if your work is selected!  Selected pieces will also help inspire people to donate their time in support of great causes. SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Wednesday June 22nd, 2010 at 5:00 p.m.
To apply create an “Artist Account” at: www.calltocommunity.ca
Submissions will be judged by an expert jury panel from the Vancouver Arts Community.
What is the Timeraiser?
The Timeraiser is a silent art auction with a twist. Instead of bidding money, participants bid volunteer time to agencies that need their skills and energy.  We buy all artwork at fair market value beforehand and auction it off on the night of the Timeraiser.  The 3rd Vancouver Timeraiser will be held on Thursday September 23rd at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Yaletown.

Successful auction bidders have 12 months to complete their volunteer pledge. When they do, they bring the artwork home as a reminder of their goodwill.  During the 12 months after the Timeraiser, while participants are completing their volunteer hours, artwork will be displayed in the offices of corporate partners and in various community spaces.

To date, the Timeraiser has generated 55,000 volunteer hours and invested $350,000 in the careers of emerging Canadian artists.
Submission Guidelines:
•    Emerging or mid-career Vancouver-area artists will be given preference
•    Submissions can only be made online at www.calltocommunity.ca
•    Submissions received after 5:00pm on June 22nd will not be accepted
•    All submitting artists will be notified via email of selection results

For more information, go to www.timeraiser.ca and please circulate this notice to your friends and colleagues in the art community.

If you have any questions,  please feel free to contact Jennifer Grebeldinger 604-637-8287 or jgrebel@timeraiser.ca.

Post-Drift greetings to all!

Silent Auction

The Silent Auction, which ran all weekend at the Artiste, was a big success even with the short notice. Preliminary tally of proceeds going to the Drift is close to $3000.00. A big thanks to all who supported the Drift and donated art and other auction items. And thanks to Artiste manager Susan Zomar for her help in making it happen. There will be a prize draw for donors and volunteers coming up soon - stay tuned!

To make it easier to register, payment can now be made through Paypal. Just click the Paypal button found on the Artists Log-in page, or on the Artists' registration form. Payment by cheque or cash is also fine. Mail cheques or cash to

Artists' Drift Checklist

  • Be sure to read the FAQ's prepared by Passia Pandora for the "how to's"  for a successful Drift event.
  • Have a guest book set up to collect email addresses from interested patrons (or have a draw and collect business cards in a bowl). There's also the silent auction idea- there's a form on the artists log-in page prepared by Passia.

For artists with open studios, include in your press releases information about payment options available (cheque, CC, paypal, etc). And for those studio artists who may have cash sales during the event- have a float on hand to make change ( suggested by Eleanor Hannan :)

Another Good Question for artists showing in a retail shop from Zahida Jaffer:

How do people buy my artwork at the event? Do they pay as if making a purchase at the store I'm in (Front & Company), and then I get compensated later? Is this a special arrangement that I need to make with the business management myself? And does the store get any commission for selling my work, or do I get 100% of the proceeds.

Reply: The shop is not responsible for selling your work. If someone is interested in a purchase they have to contact you directly and you need to leave cards or something with your contact information for Drift visitors so they can get in touch. Shops don't take commission on sales as they don't get involved in that aspect.

We have prepared a document with Artists' Resources and information in a downloadable format. Thanks to Passia Pandora for preparing the information. Drift 2008 Artists' Resources

If you are planning to hold a Silent Auction,  Passia has also prepared a form:  Silent Auction Bid Sheet

And click here for a copy of the Drift 2008 E-card

The Drift Logo is also available to use for the purpose of publicizing the Drift.

Attention All Artists Showing in a Main Street ( or nearby) retailer for the Drift : PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!

The match-ups have been done according to our best knowledge of your work and the spaces available at our retail partners. We have attempted to honour special requests made by both parties. Artists who have not yet paid their fee or sent in images may not be able to be matched in time for the printed publicity deadline.

We expect that 99%  of these match ups will be acceptable and that everyone will do their best to work with the arrangements offered. If you have any SERIOUS ( ie. not trivial) objection, this must be communicated to Diane, diane@thedrift.ca , before Monday August 11. The details will be going to the graphic designer the next day.

Artists' Responsibilities:

It is your responsibility to visit the store manager or owner ( please call ahead). This visit should ideally take place by early September.
You will need to view the space, find out if there are any space restrictions or other things you need to know about hanging your work and arrange a time before October 1 to hang/set up your piece(s).
In some cases you will have been given 2 retailers to show at if the space is limited, giving visitors to the Drift more opportunity to see your work. In this case you will need to make arrangements with both retailers.
Work is to remain at the retail location for a minimum of two weeks, October 1-15. If an arrangement is made between the retailer and yourself, work can remain in place for as long as is agreed upon.

Retail Partners will be sent an email from the Drift by August 15 with your contact information/website link provided before your visit, so they are familiar with you before you call.
In some cases, retailers have offered to host an artist talk, opening/meet the artist, art demonstration or other performance.
Specific details should be arranged to the mutual satisfaction of both parties. Please advise Diane of the details ( time & description) well before the October 3-5 weekend. We will publish details on the Drift web site.  You can also put a description of the event on your profile page.

All artists are strongly encouraged to be present at their location for at least a couple of hours each day during the Drift weekend. Others have found it very effective to sit in front of the shop ( with owners' permission)  and engage visitors, and be actively creating or demonstrating some aspect of the art they do. Or get the public involved in a simple creative activity. We invite all ideas and hope you will have fun with it. The more art and activity on the street the better.

An Artists' Resources Package is being prepared and will be available with these and other suggestions for a successful Drift 2008 - eg. how to write an artist statement and bio., ideas for publicizing yourself etc. This will be available soon to download on the Drift web site/ Artist/members page.  You will also be able to pick up publicity materials soon after Labour Day. Maps, posters postcards, e-cards, email ideas . . . . lots of resources. Details coming up.

Thanks for taking the time to read this carefully. You are responsible for making yourself familiar with the requirements you have agreed to when you registered.

Check the artist log-in page regularly for updates.

Happy Drifting!  . . . .

Having Trouble Logging In?

Try these tips to getting your info online:

You'll need to wait until you get a confirmation email that your registration has been made active before you can log in.
The image you uploaded for the registration does not go on your profile page on the site. It's for reference only when we process an application.

Once you have logged in, you need to upload your images by clicking on "edit photo gallery". Click Upload, then the Browse button and then locate the images you want in your files ( jpg's) , highlight and click "open" for each one. Then when you have chosen all the images you want ( up to ten), click the upload button.

NOTE : The first image you upload AFTER LOGGING IN will be selected for the Drift 2008 preview slideshow on the home page. You can change this any time by rearranging the images.

Images should be 400 pixels wide at a minimum. Anything too small will not display properly.

Events have to be done singly, at the moment. If it's a month long show you can explain that on your profile page, perhaps. And in the description of the event you can give the dates etc.
