Photography

Some of these photos are from my trip this past autumn to visit friends and family in "the east".  A stop in Saskatoon to photograph the big sky was a highlight of my travels, as was watching the sun rise on the St. Lawrence River near Kingston.  It was a departure to experience the bucolic and rural when my usual practice is to shoot urban scenes.  Notice the preponderance of birds - both real and sporting!

I was born in Montreal where I took my first pictures with a Kodak "bellows" camera and 120 film.  Since then I've moved from film to digital, although film still holds the greatest magic and is the most challenging for me.  I'm mostly self-taught and count among my influences Judy Dater, Imogene Cunningham, Diane Arbus, William Claxton and the photographers from the US Farm Security Administration who so poignantly documented families migrating from the "dust bowl" during the depression.

Cartoonists, songsters and writers also influence what can sometimes seem a quirky vision: Lynda Barry, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Jane Urquhart are a few.

I am looking for models who have time and patience to sit for portraits.  Please contact me at 604-838-6800 if you're interested.
